Begun somewhere around 1824 as a stagecoach tavern by Samuel Gardner, this house became an inn under the ownership of Andrew Ruddell and Charles Collier. It was advertised as the Planters Hotel in 1853 by Henry Hurlie and Nicholas Wylie.

The Georgia Railroad was extended to Washington in 1853, and this hotel was for the accomodation of the people who came in on the train, particularly the traveling salesmen.
The wide parlors of the hotel lent themselves to splendid parties.
This house is included in the National Register District 3
