Serene and lovely in its charming little garden, the Church of the Mediator offers a quiet sanctuary for the hustle and bustle of the fast-paced world. The garden, the brick wall and wrought-iron gate are gifts of love and much work from Washington's beloved "Miss Bessie" (Elizabeth) Green. The handsome Stained Glass window, depicting St. Francis of Assissi with birds and small animals, which greets the visitor iin the vestibule above the guest register, was made in her honor.

This is not the original Episcopal Church building. The first one stood on the nortwest corner of Robert Toombs Ave and Allison St and was burned in the great fire of 1895. But the original pews, lectern, credence table, altar and font were saved and are in the present church. They are all handmade of virgin Wilkes County pine.

The first communion of the curch was celebrated in the home of Judge Garnett Andrews and in memory of this his descendants gave the larger windows. These windows and the two smaller rear windows were executed by the noted Wilbur Herbert Burnham who designed and built the Lee and Jackson windows in the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. The deep blue in the windows is a Burnham trademark.
