Old Presbyterian Manse

This home was restored in the 70's by Mr. & Mrs. Bill Bennett and the old handmade fretwork, "petticoat" trimming and banisters were highlighted by the choice of paint, revealing the careful attention to detail which marks all the old houses in town.

This houe was built around 1830 and was once occupied by the noted early-Georgia Presbyterian minister, the beloved Rev. Francis Robert Goulding. Dr. Goulding was an ardent nature lover and a great friend of young people. He was sometimes criticized severly for spending so much time with his young parisheners and for taking them on field trips to the woods and streams. But this farsighted man felt that the future belonged to these young people and their steps must be turned in the right direction. Dr. Goulding wrote widely for Sunday Schools, published many books for juveniles, the best-known being "The Young Marooners." He also invented a sewing machine before Elias Howe but did not patent it.
